In this third part of Affiliations, I would discuss practical ways by which we can hold fast the peculiarity of our persons even while in this perverse generation. You can always read the first and the second parts.
1. Ensure a preserved communion with the Holy Spirit.
The evident hope we have even while on this earth is the presence of the Holy Spirit. Jesus knew that, if He left us without sending the Holy Spirit, we would be comfortless. So, the Holy Spirit has got a whole lot to do in our lives (see John 16:7-11).
Read John 16:13: “Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.”
As you know that the world in which you and I live in is perverse and because of our redeemed nature, we cannot affiliate ourselves with just anything; we have to stay aligned with the truth. The Holy Spirit is the one who would guide us into the truth even when there might be sleight waves of deception.
But, the truth remains that, we wouldn’t experience the reality of these works (the influences of the Holy Spirit) if we don’t have an active communion (relationship) with Him. You can relate to this with the Apostle Paul’s final statement to the Corinthians: “The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all. Amen.” (2nd Corinthians 13:14)
You see, the function of the Holy Spirit in a Christian life cannot be overemphasized. In fact, it can be accurately said that, the presence of the Holy Spirit in a life is the only hope for redemption on the last day.
“And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.” Ephesians 4:30
Is it the trending song in town that you want to talk about or the commonest style of dressing or the sleight introduction of the slang used at every slight moment? We come in contact with them at almost every instant and so, we can easily get affiliated with them.
Only a preserved communion with the Holy Spirit can help one to stay aligned despite the distractions in this world.
2. Dwell more on what’s profiting.
As I have mentioned earlier, trying not to have contact with the perverseness of this world is almost impossible but, we can always get our way out of their proposing affiliations. We can achieve this by dwelling more (giving attention) on the things that are profiting.
“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.” Colossians 3:16
Candidly, to not want to get yoked with the world’s perverseness is a thing of warfare. Talking from a personal experience, I have had times when I had to battle with the rythm of some secular songs playing in my mind. You want to ask how? There’s this hotel located in my street such that, whenever they put on their stereo systems, the blares of the song tunes (not necessarily the lyrics) tend to strike a cord in my mind. Yes, it’s that way but I have the consciousness that, I cannot sing such. So, I have to fill my mind with what profits.
The same scenario occurs when we are in environments where conversations that are pollutants to our souls are engaged. There are times when we can excuse ourselves but at some other times (inevitable times), we just have to engage our minds with God’s Word.
I know, doing these things are not easy but, we can always achieve it by the “word of the Lord unto us, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the Lord of hosts.” (Zechariah 4:6)
3. Constantly declare your stance.
One important thing that I discovered to help in distinguishment in any sector of life is constant declaration. Take for instance, a marital relationship. If the people involved do not constantly declare their affection towards each other, there is going to be some sort of missing link. They cannot just say that, their love for each other lies within; that, they don’t want to express it either privately or publicly. How does that sound? Awkward, right?
It’s the same thing that applies to us in our relationship with God (Remember, the things of the spiritual are as real as those of the physical). So, if you want to be strong in affiliating right, you have to constantly declare your stance (both in word and in deeds).
In your relationships with people, declare your stance. In your travellings, declare your stance. In your business transactions, declare your stance. In your refreshments, declare your stance. In everything you do, declare your stance.
Now, I’m not saying that, you should go ahead shouting everywhere you go. But, in your small castle, show forth what you hold on to.
And, you wonder why I subtitled this part of Affiliations as Spiritual Warfare. It’s because, we are really engaged in spiritual warfare and we can only get to scale through when the Holy Spirit leads us into all truths.
Staying strong in this perverse generation.
